Five Fabulous Ways to Have a Fun Galentine's Day

Valentine's is a day used to celebrate the romantic partner in your life, but there's another celebration right before that day to commemorate the non-romantic loves in your lives, your friends! Before I get into ideas of different ways to celebrate the unofficial holiday, let's discuss how Galentine's day came to be. The concept of Galentine's day is credited to Leslie Knope, a deputy director, from the 16th episode of the second season of the show Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knopes host a brunch in the episode where she and her close friends bond over a waffle brunch and gift-giving. The holiday at its core is the time to gather with friends (usually ladies, but any friend will do) and declare your (non-romantic) love for them by showering them with various forms of affection. Leslie explains Galentine's Day best: "Every February 13, my ladyfriends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it... Ladies celebrating, ladies." Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year may look slightly different, but that does not mean it will be any less fun through an online celebration. Here are five fabulous ways to have fun with your girls for Galentine's Day.

1. Virtual Paint and Sip

Grab your paintbrushes and head to Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok and find a painting tutorial for you and your girls! You can all do the same painting, or you can all do different paintings that speak to the individual. If you are of age, you can have an alcoholic beverage. If not, there are delicious mocktails, or any drink will do.

2. Make a Meal/ a Dish

During the pre-covid days going to brunch was a Galentine's Day go-to. This year try making one of your favorite brunch dishes. Egg benedict, cinnamon rolls, and pancakes are a few delicious options, to name a few! If you're up for something new, try doing a cooking competition-themed challenge, such as a mystery box challenge from Masterchef.

3. Order Each Other a Surprise

If your friends live in another state or out of the country, ordering something off a company's website and getting it mailed to their address is a pleasant surprise. You could do this gift exchange like a secret Santa if your friend group is larger! This surprise could be food such as a box of chocolates, or it could be makeup from their favorite company.

4. Fancy Night In

Get dressed up in your favorite outfit, do your hair, put on makeup, and lounge around with your friends on Zoom, Facetime, or any other app that you might use. For added fun, try doing a photoshoot with your friends through the phone.

5. Watch a Show/Movie Together

There are various apps that you can watch tv shows synchronously with friends and family. TV can be a form of escapism, and it is used as a tool to rewind by many. Watching TV with friends makes the experience of watching something 100x better due to the various responses from each person.
